Atropos

In Greek myth, the eldest of the three Fates, whose work is to cut the thread of a mortal life — the figure of death made inflexible.

Atropos is, in Greek myth, the third and eldest of the Moirai — the three Fates — the one whose office is to cut the thread of a human life. Her name means roughly “the inflexible” or “she who cannot be turned,” and it carries the whole of her function: where her sisters spin and measure, Atropos brings the work to its end, and there is no appeal.

The Fates appear as a trio with shared labor. Hesiod’s Theogony names them Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos and assigns them the giving of good and ill to mortals at birth; the same poem, in different passages, calls them daughters of Night and elsewhere of Zeus and Themis, an inconsistency the ancient sources never fully resolved. The later and tidier division of tasks — Clotho spinning the thread, Lachesis measuring its length, Atropos cutting it — is a reading that grew clearer over time rather than a fixed doctrine present from the start. What stays constant is the image of a single allotted span, already drawn out, and a moment at which it is severed.

In Plato’s Republic, the three are set within the myth of Er as daughters of Necessity, seated about the spindle of the cosmos and singing — Lachesis of what has been, Clotho of what is, Atropos of what is to come. There the Fates are bound into a vision of the ordered heavens and the soul’s choice of its next life, so that cutting and turning belong to the same machinery that moves the stars. Roman writers gave the trio their own names, the Parcae, and the Greek figures passed into Latin poetry largely unchanged in function.

What the Fates personify is the limit on every other power, divine ones included: even Zeus, in the older picture, bends to what is allotted. They are not cruel in the texts so much as impartial — fate as the thing that holds whether or not anyone wills it. Atropos is the sharpest edge of that idea, the point where allotment becomes irreversible. The reading that joins the spinning Fates to later schemes of cosmic necessity — the spindle of the Republic, the chains of cause traced by the philosophers — is a connection drawn after the fact and worth marking as such: the early Atropos is a figure in a story about death, not a principle in a system. Still, the shears do the same work in either frame. The thread is measured out, and then it is not lengthened again.
