Alcinous

In Homer's Odyssey, the king of the Phaeacians on the island of Scheria, whose hospitality to the shipwrecked Odysseus carries the hero home to Ithaca.

Alcinous is the king of the Phaeacians in Homer’s Odyssey, a legendary monarch whose court on the island of Scheria is the last way-station between Odysseus and his return to Ithaca. The name is not to be confused with the later Platonist writer of the same spelling; this Alcinous belongs wholly to Greek heroic legend, and survives only in poetry.

He enters the poem in its central books. Odysseus, shipwrecked and naked, is brought to the Phaeacian palace by the king’s daughter Nausicaa; there he is received by Alcinous and his queen, Arete, fed and clothed before he is even asked his name. The Phaeacians are described as a people set apart — kin to the gods, expert seafarers, living in ease at the edge of the known world. Their hospitality is lavish, and it is in this safe harbour, at the king’s prompting, that Odysseus tells the long tale of his wanderings: the Cyclops, Circe, the descent to the dead, the cattle of the Sun. Much of what later readers know as the adventures of the Odyssey is, within the poem itself, a story spoken aloud to Alcinous and his court.

The episode is also where Homeric hospitality, xenia, shows its full weight. To take in a stranger, feed him, and send him home laden with gifts was a sacred obligation, and Alcinous discharges it completely: the Phaeacians’ magical ships, which need neither steersman nor oar, carry the sleeping Odysseus across the sea in a single night. For this the poem exacts a price. Poseidon, angered that the Phaeacians ferry men so freely, turns the returning ship to stone within sight of its own harbour — a warning that their long career as escorts of mortals is meant to end.

His name recurs elsewhere in Greek tradition. In Apollonius of Rhodes’ Argonautica, an Alcinous again rules the Phaeacians and shelters Jason and Medea, and his fabled gardens — an orchard where fruit ripens in every season — became proverbial in antiquity for abundance. Scholars have long debated whether Scheria reflects any real place or is purely a poet’s invention, and no firm answer has held; the island functions in the poem less as geography than as a threshold, the courteous human world the hero must pass through before facing the harder reckoning at home.

Alcinous left no cult and founded no line that tradition kept. He remains what the poem made him: the good host at the far edge of the sea, whose kindness both completes the journey and, for his own people, brings it to a close.
