Aegina

A nymph of Greek myth, daughter of the river-god Asopus, carried off by Zeus to the island that took her name and there the mother of King Aeacus.

Aegina is a figure of Greek mythology: a nymph, daughter of the river-god Asopus, whom Zeus carried away to an island in the Saronic Gulf that afterwards bore her name. The myth is at once a story of abduction and an act of etymology — it explains how an island once called Oenone came to be Aegina, and ties the place to the god by way of the woman taken there.

In the older tellings, Zeus seized her in the form of an eagle, or of a flame, and bore her off from her father’s banks. Asopus, the river, went searching for his daughter and was driven back to his channel by Zeus’s thunderbolt — a detail Greek writers offered, half in earnest, to account for the lumps of coal said to be found in the riverbed. On the island Aegina bore a son, Aeacus, who grew to be its king. When his people were destroyed by a plague sent by a jealous Hera, Aeacus is said to have prayed to his father, and Zeus raised up a new race for him from the ants of the island — the Myrmidons, whose name the Greeks heard in myrmex, the ant. Through Aeacus the line ran on to Peleus and Telamon, and so to Achilles and Ajax, which made Aegina an ancestress of the heroes who fought at Troy.

The myth is preserved across the usual range of classical sources rather than in a single canonical text: it appears in the genealogical poetry attributed to Hesiod, in Pindar’s odes for victors from the island, and in the later handbooks and in Ovid, each adding or pruning detail. What the sources agree on is the shape — the river’s daughter, the god’s descent, the eponymous island, the royal son. The variants concern the manner of the abduction and the embroidery around it.

Scholarship reads Aegina as one of a large class of figures whose chief function is to bind a god to a place. The island of Aegina was an old and proud maritime state, minting some of the earliest Greek coinage and keeping a famous temple; a foundation myth descending from Zeus gave that pride a divine warrant, and the nymph is the hinge on which it turns. Her name is the island’s, and the island’s is hers, so that it is rarely possible to say which the Greeks named first. Like Cyrene, Thebe, and the other river-daughters loved by gods, she stands at the seam where a landscape acquires a story and a lineage — less a character with a life of her own than the personified beginning of a place.
