Pax

The Roman goddess of peace — a personification raised to a state cult under Augustus, honoured at the Altar of Augustan Peace and pictured with olive branch and cornucopia.

Pax is the Roman personification of peace, worshipped as a goddess and made, under Augustus, an instrument of imperial ideology. Her name is simply the Latin word for peace, and she belongs to a class of Roman deities — Victoria, Concordia, Fortuna, Salus — in which an abstraction central to public life was given an altar and a face. What distinguishes Pax is timing: she rose to prominence at the exact moment the Roman state had something to say about peace, and meant a particular thing by it.

That meaning was not the absence of conflict so much as the order secured by victory. The peace Augustus advertised was the pax Romana, the settled condition that followed a century of civil war and was held in place by Roman arms. The defining monument is the Ara Pacis Augustae, the Altar of Augustan Peace, voted by the Senate in 13 BCE and dedicated in 9 to mark the emperor’s return from the western provinces. Its sculpted processions and its panel of a seated maternal figure amid fruit and beasts — variously read as Pax, Tellus (Earth), or Venus — present peace as fertility, abundance, and dynastic continuity rather than as the mere cessation of fighting. Later the emperor Vespasian built a Temple of Peace in Rome after the suppression of the Jewish revolt, housing spoils from Jerusalem; here, too, the goddess presided over a peace that was the spoil of war.

On coins Pax is among the most frequently struck of all Roman deities, a standing woman holding an olive branch and often a cornucopia or sceptre, sometimes burning weapons. The image made the claim portable: every transaction passed the regime’s promise from hand to hand. Scholarship reads these personification cults less as objects of private devotion than as the visual grammar of Roman public self-presentation, and Pax above all as a creation of the Augustan settlement — older as a word than as a goddess, with little independent mythology of her own.

The Greeks had honoured a comparable figure, Eirene, one of the Horae and the subject of an Athenian state cult in the fourth century BCE; the Roman goddess absorbed her iconography along with her function. The resemblance is real, and the Romans themselves felt it. Yet the two carried different freight — the Greek Eirene a civic good among others, the Roman Pax the keystone of an imperial order — and the same olive branch meant something distinct in each hand. After antiquity Pax left little cult behind, but her emblems did not vanish: the figure of Peace with her branch persisted through Renaissance allegory into the personifications that still appear on monuments and currency, an iconography that outlasted the goddess who first carried it.
