Endymion
The beautiful youth of Greek myth whom the Moon loved and who was granted unending sleep — kept young and unaging, visited each night while he dreamed.
Endymion is a figure of Greek mythology: a youth of surpassing beauty whom Selene, the Moon, fell in love with, and who was granted a sleep without waking — kept forever young in a cave on a mountain in Caria, while the goddess came down each night to look on him. The sources do not agree on who he was. He is a shepherd in some tellings, a hunter in others, and a king of Elis in the genealogies; what holds across the versions is the sleep, the beauty, and the love of the Moon.
The mythographers preserve more than one account of how the endless sleep came about. In one, Selene begged Zeus to grant Endymion whatever he most desired, and he chose deathless sleep, to stay as he was and never grow old. In another it was Zeus himself who imposed the sleep, in some versions as a punishment. The detail that recurs, and that gave the figure its long afterlife, is the strangeness of the bargain: the youth escapes age and death only by surrendering waking life altogether, loved by a goddess he cannot meet except in a condition close to absence.
Ancient writers already read the story as more than a tale. Some took the nightly descent of the Moon as the plain content of the myth — a way of speaking about the bright body that crosses the sky and seems to bend toward one place. Later interpreters, particularly in the allegorizing habits of late antiquity, treated Endymion’s sleep as an image of the soul withdrawn from the senses, or of the mind given over to contemplation; the figure was available, as such figures were, to be read upward. Whether any of this was intended by the early tellers is exactly what cannot be recovered, and the allegory should be marked as the reading it is, not mistaken for the myth’s origin.
The story kept its hold long after the cult of the Moon had faded. Roman poets returned to it; sarcophagi carried the sleeping youth and the descending goddess as an image of death softened into rest. In English the name became almost a byword for the beautiful sleeper, and a long Romantic poem took it up at length, fixing Endymion for later readers as much as a mood as a person — desire suspended, beauty held out of reach of time.
What the figure carries, across these uses, is a single uneasy idea: that to be loved by something deathless might mean being placed beyond the reach of ordinary life rather than rescued into a fuller one. The myth never resolves whether the sleep is a gift or a loss. It leaves him there, unaging, watched.
