Aquileian Rite
The medieval Latin liturgical use of the Patriarchate of Aquileia — a regional variant of the Western Mass and office that survived in northeastern Italy until the see was dissolved.
The Aquileian Rite was the distinctive Latin liturgical use of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, the ancient metropolitan church at the head of the Adriatic that governed a wide stretch of northeastern Italy and lands beyond the Alps. Like the better-known Ambrosian use of Milan and the Mozarabic use of Spain, it was not a separate religion or even a separate liturgy in the strict sense, but a regional version of the Western rite: the same Mass and daily office as the rest of Latin Christendom, carried in its own order of texts, chants, and observances.
Aquileia was one of the oldest sees in the West, and the prestige of its bishops — who from the sixth century bore the rare title of patriarch — gave its customs the standing to persist. The use is known mainly from the service books that survive: missals, breviaries, and ritual texts copied for the cathedral and the churches under its jurisdiction. From these, scholars can reconstruct particular features — proper feasts and saints honored in the region, distinctive prayers and chant, an ordering of the church year that diverged in details from the Roman books spreading out of the papal court. What such manuscripts establish is real but limited: they show a recognizable local tradition, not a wholly independent liturgy, and much of the rite’s finer texture is recoverable only through patient comparison of surviving copies.
The history of the use is bound to the history of the see. The Patriarchate of Aquileia reached far in the early Middle Ages, but its reach narrowed under the pressures of rival churches, secular powers, and the slow Roman standardization of the Western liturgy that gathered force after the Council of Trent. The town of Aquileia itself dwindled, the patriarchal residence shifted, and in 1751 the patriarchate was suppressed altogether, its territory divided between the new archdioceses of Udine and Gorizia. With the institution gone, the rite that had depended on it faded into the general Roman use, surviving thereafter chiefly as an object of study.
Modern liturgical scholarship treats the Aquileian Rite as one of the medieval Western “uses” — local recensions of the Latin liturgy that flourished before Tridentine uniformity, and whose differences from Rome are matters of detail and arrangement rather than of underlying faith. Its interest lies in what it preserves: the memory of a time when the Latin Church was a federation of regional customs rather than a single book, and a single great see could keep its own order of worship for centuries before the wider current absorbed it.
